What is Blepharitis?

Blepharitis is a condition that affects the eyelids. It causes inflammation of the eyelids leading to red, sore and itchy eyes. It is a common eye condition and is responsible for 5% of all eye-related conditions seen in the population. Blepharitis is even more common in older adults, but it can occur at any age.

The causes can be bacteria, dermatitis (dry flaky skin), dysfunction of the oil gland in eyelids or a combination of all these factors. Oil (meibomian) glands are found on the edges of the eyelids and are responsible for lubricating the eye. When these glands don’t work properly or become blocked, it can cause inflammation and dryness.

Blepharitis can be a persistent and frustrating condition as it can reoccur many times. If left untreated, it can lead to various eye complications such as contact lens intolerance, conjunctivitis, dry eye syndrome and scarring.

How we can help you

Blepharitis can be a nuisance to your daily life by causing you pain and discomfort. If you suffer from blepharitis, there a variety of treatment options available to help alleviate symptoms and treat the root cause of this problem.

It is very important to maintain good eye hygiene when managing blepharitis. Using a warm compress on the eyes also help soften any skin around the eye and the flow of the skins natural oils.
