Yes. A negative result does not exclude infection. Seek advice if symptoms persist or worsen, rather than repeatedly testing for reassurance.

This can happen with a UTI, but leukocytes can also reflect inflammation or contamination. The result alone cannot establish the cause. Discuss it with a pharmacist or GP, particularly if you have symptoms.

What if leukocytes are positive but nitrites are negative?

Not necessarily. A positive result can suggest a UTI, but it needs to be considered alongside your symptoms and medical history. If you have burning when passing urine, increased frequency or urgency, a clinical assessment can help determine whether antibiotics are appropriate.

If you regularly get UTIs, you may also benefit from a review of prevention options. Hiprex (methenamine hippurate) may be suitable for some people to help prevent recurrent infections; it is not a replacement for treatment of an acute UTI.

Does a positive result mean I need antibiotics?

These strips cannot confirm whether Hiprex is working and do not measure urine pH. Hiprex is used to help prevent recurrent UTIs and new infection symptoms need medical advice even while taking it. Do not change your treatment based on a strip result.

Can I use these strips to check whether Hiprex is working?

No. Test strips cannot reliably distinguish between these conditions. Persistent or recurring bladder symptoms need assessment, even if home test results are negative.

Can these strips tell me whether I have a UTI or an interstitial cystitis flare?

Use the result read within the leaflet’s stated time window. For this kit, read at 2 minutes and disregard changes after 3 minutes.

My strip changed colour later. Which result should I use?

Suresign advises avoiding testing during your period and for three days afterwards because contamination can affect results. If you have symptoms, seek advice without waiting to test.

No. Contact your GP promptly if you suspect a UTI during pregnancy, regardless of a home test result.

Can I use this test instead of seeing a GP if I am pregnant?

Do not rely on home strips to diagnose a UTI in these groups. Results can be misleading; symptoms should be assessed by a healthcare professional.

Are these suitable for checking UTIs in older people or catheter users?

Contact your GP urgently or NHS 111 for suspected UTI with fever or shivering, pain in your back beneath the ribs, blood in your urine, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Also seek urgent advice if you are pregnant, male, aged 65 or over, have diabetes, a weakened immune system or a catheter, or the patient is a child.

Seek further advice if symptoms have not improved within 48 hours of starting treatment. Call 999 for confusion, drowsiness or difficulty speaking.
