Malaria Prevention

Malaria is transmitted through a single bite from an infected mosquito. It is common in tropical regions like parts of Africa, Asia, Central and South America, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, the Middle East, and some Pacific islands. Malaria is not found in the UK and cannot be spread from person to person.

The disease is caused by five species of the Plasmodium parasite. Travellers to regions where malaria is common are at risk, especially migrants returning to their home countries. Those more vulnerable to severe malaria include pregnant women, children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Common symptoms of malaria include fever, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, and sometimes cough or diarrhoea. Malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum can worsen quickly, leading to life-threatening complications if not treated promptly.

Malaria prevention follows the "A, B, C, D" approach:

Awareness of the risks,

Bite prevention (especially at night),

Chemoprophylaxis (taking malaria prevention tablets),

Diagnosis (early diagnosis and treatment).

Malaria prevention medication depends on the travel destination, parasite species, and the individual’s health. Travellers should know the symptoms and seek prompt medical attention if they show signs of malaria during their trip or within a year of returning.
