Morning After Pill (emergency contraceptive)

Unplanned pregnancy can pose a significant emotional and financial burden on those who are not prepared to make that decision. Emergency Contraceptives (EC) is a birth control method used to prevent pregnancy in women. It is commonly known as the “morning after pill” due to its historic use of taking in the morning after a night of unprotected sex although some can be effective for up to 5 days after unprotected sex. Unprotected sex can result from not using any contraception, contraception method failing (condom breaking) or forgetting to take regular oral contraceptive pills. We offer EC for all women over the age of 18 years. It is important to understand that EC is not a means of abortion and will not terminate a pregnancy if the egg is already fertilised. If you are already pregnant, EC should not be used as it will not work; and you should consult a doctor or pharmacist.

How we can help you

We understand that an unplanned pregnancy can be stressful for both you and your partner, that is why we offer several safe and effective licensed treatment options to help. EC pills are a trusted method to prevent pregnancy and have a very high success rate. The sooner you take EC after unprotected sex, the more effective it can be. EC pills contain hormones and work by delaying or stopping release of the female egg, blocking fertilisation with sperm and therefore preventing pregnancy.

EC pills may affect your next menstrual cycle causing heavier or lighter periods than usual and can also cause periods to be early or late. It is not recommended to use EC frequently and it is not a suitable replacement for regular birth control.

At My Private Pharmacist, we can supply EC for both immediate uses, depending on the time of unprotected sex, and for future use. Supplying for future use can help you be prepared in advance if unprotected sex or failed contraception happens. This is common in situations where it may be difficult to obtain a trusted EC such as when going on holiday. We offer support and advice to help you choose the right EC for you. Our confidential and discreet service is here to provide a plan B if you do not have one!
