Esomeprazole belongs to a class of medications known as Proton-Pump Inhibitors (PPI’s). Proton pumps are cells found in the lining of the stomach and are responsible for secreting gastric acid into the stomach. Esomeprazole prevents a proportion of these proton pumps from working and reduces the amount of acid produced in the stomach that can be regurgitated, helping to control the symptoms of acid-reflux. 

Esomeprazole gets to work within an hour, but the full benefit is seen after 3 days of taking a regular dose. 

Esomeprazole is a tried and trusted medicine for indigestion and heartburn. When taken consecutively for 2 weeks, over 80% of users reported meaningful improvement of their symptoms. Esomeprazole has shown to be effective over a 24-hour period, including during the night. Over 70% of users reported complete resolution of night-time heartburn after 2 weeks of esomeprazole treatment.

What is the difference between and generic makes of a medicine?

A branded make of medicine initially becomes available for sale by the innovating manufacturer that has discovered the medicine through a very expensive process. As a result, this manufacturer receives the right (patent) from the government to become the only company that is allowed to make and sell such medicine for many years so they can recuperate some of their expenses and make some profit from their work.

After the patent period is over, other manufacturers will be allowed to manufacture this branded medicine, but they will only be allowed to offer the medicine under the medicines actual name (known as the Generic name) or through their own new brand for marketing purposes. As this process is not as expensive as the initial medicine discovery, generic manufactures can offer the medicine at a much cheaper price compared to the innovator’s branded one. 

Why is the generic make cheaper than the brand?

The recommended daily dose of esomeprazole varies depending on your condition and severity of symptoms. The starting dose for acid reflux is one 20mg tablet or capsule each day for 14 days, but in some cases, it may be taken on an ongoing basis if you have been advised by your doctor after medical examinations. 

It may take at least 2 or 3 days of treatment before an improvement is seen. This medication can be taken with or without food. 

Possible side effects associated with esomeprazole use include:

·      Very common (1 in 10 people) – none

·      Common (1 in 10 – 1 in 100 people) – headache, effects on your stomach or gut: diarrhoea, stomach pain, constipation, wind (flatulence), feeling sick or being sick (vomiting), benign polyps in the stomach

·      Uncommon (1 in 100 – 1 in 1,000 people) - swelling of the feet and ankles,  disturbed sleep (insomnia), dizziness, tingling feelings such as “pins and needles”, feeling sleepy, spinning feeling (vertigo), dry mouth, changes in blood tests that check how the liver is working, skin rash, lumpy rash (hives) and itchy skin, fracture of the hip, wrist or spine
