Orlistat 120 mg is a prescription-only capsule used for weight management alongside a reduced-calorie diet. Xenical is a brand containing orlistat. A prescriber assesses whether treatment is suitable for you.

Orlistat blocks digestive enzymes called lipases, reducing the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. The unabsorbed fat passes out in your stools. It does not directly burn stored body fat.

How does Orlistat help with my weight management?

Clinical studies show that orlistat can support additional weight loss alongside dietary changes, but results vary. Treatment should stop if you have not lost at least 5% of your starting weight after 12 weeks. This is a review threshold, not a promised result.

Take one capsule with water immediately before, during or within one hour after each main meal, up to three times daily. Skip the dose if you miss the meal or it contains no fat. Follow your prescription.

To get the best results, Orlistat should be taken with a well-balanced, reduced fat and low-calorie meals. The mealtime dosing schedule makes it easy to incorporate an Orlistat capsule as part of your eating routine (i.e. three times a day with meals). Possible side effects associated with Orlistat use include:

Very common (1 in 10 people) – soft stools, oily spotting, flatulence with discharge, fatty stools, headache, abdominal pain, hypoglycaemia, respiratory infection

Common (1 in 10 - 1 in 100 people) – rectal pain, abdominal distension, incontinence, fatigue, anxiety, menstrual irregularity, urinary infection, tooth/gum disorder
