Orlistat works in the gastrointestinal tract by inhibiting the enzymes known as pancreatic lipases. These enzymes are responsible for storing fat from diet in our body. Orlistat limits the activity of this enzyme which in turn reduces the amount of fat absorbed into our body. The undigested fat is then excreted from the body in the stool.  

How does Orlistat help with my weight management?

Clinical studies have shown that Orlistat, when taken three times a day, can block the absorption of 25% of dietary fat. Orlistat can help you lose 2kg for every 1kg you would lose from diet and exercise alone (doubles your results!). 

Over time, when used in conjunction with a low-calorie diet, Orlistat can result in a 5% to 10% weight loss. 

Generic and branded make of a medicine are the same and both makes have to meet the same quality and safety standards before they are allowed to be sold as a medicine.

What is the difference between brand and generic makes of a medicine?

A branded make of medicine initially becomes available for sale by the innovating manufacturer that has discovered the medicine through a very expensive process. As a result, this manufacturer receives the right (patent) from the government to become the only company that is allowed to make and sell such medicine for many years so they can recuperate some of their expenses and make some profit from their work.

After the patent period is over, other manufacturers will be allowed to manufacture this branded medicine, but they will only be allowed to offer the medicine under the medicines actual name (known as the Generic name) or through their own new brand for marketing purposes. As this process is not as expensive as the initial medicine discovery, generic manufactures can offer the medicine at a much cheaper price compared to the innovator’s branded one. 

Why is the generic make cheaper than the brand?

Orlistat comes in 60mg (OTC) and 120mg (prescription strength) capsules. The recommended dose of Orlistat is one capsule with each of the three main meals of the day. Capsules should be swallowed whole with a glass of water immediately before, during or up to one hour after a meal.  If a meal is missed or contains no fat, the dose of Orlistat should be omitted.

To get the best results, Orlistat should be taken with a well-balanced, reduced fat and low-calorie meals. The mealtime dosing schedule makes it easy to incorporate an Orlistat capsule as part of your eating routine (i.e. three times a day with meals). Possible side effects associated with Orlistat use include:

Very common (1 in 10 people) – soft stools, oily spotting, flatulence with discharge, fatty stools, headache, abdominal pain, hypoglycaemia, respiratory infection


Common (1 in 10 - 1 in 100 people) – rectal pain, abdominal distension, incontinence, fatigue, anxiety, menstrual irregularity, urinary infection, tooth/gum disorder
