Clotrimazole is an effective antifungal medicine that kills the fungi by breaking down their membrane.  This results in clearing the infection and providing relief from symptoms such as irritation and itch. 

How does Clotrimazole help with my thrush?

Clotrimazole is a proven treatment for fungal skin infections including vaginal infections both internally and externally. Clotrimazole creams are commonly prescribed by doctors to treat thrush and the products have been made available for safe and easy access to treatment.  

This medicine has been in use since 1969 and its safety and effectiveness has been proven clinically over time. 

Note: Canesten (Clotrimazole) 2% cream is not available as a generic in the UK.  

Generic and branded make of a medicine are the same and both makes have to meet the same quality and safety standards before they are allowed to be sold as a medicine.

What is the difference between brand and generic makes of a medicine?

A branded make of medicine initially becomes available for sale by the innovating manufacturer that has discovered the medicine through a very expensive process. As a result, this manufacturer receives the right (patent) from the government to become the only company that is allowed to make and sell such medicine for many years so they can recuperate some of their expenses and make some profit from their work.

After the patent period is over, other manufacturers will be allowed to manufacture this branded medicine, but they will only be allowed to offer the medicine under the medicines actual name (known as the Generic name) or through their own new brand for marketing purposes. As this process is not as expensive as the initial medicine discovery, generic manufactures can offer the medicine at a much cheaper price compared to the innovator’s branded one. 

Why is the generic make cheaper than the brand?

Apply thinly to the area around the entrance of the vagina and vulva 2-3 times a day and continue until symptoms of the infection disappear. 

You should also use a product for treating the internal (vaginal) infection at the same time.  

Apply the cream to the end of the penis 2-3 times a day for up to two weeks. 

A strip of cream (0.5cm long) is enough to treat an area the size of your hand.

Recommended dose of Clotrimazole 2% cream

Possible side effects associated with Clotrimazole use may include:

- red, irritated skin, pain or a burning or stinging sensation

If the side effects do not go away, try using a smaller amount of the treatment or stop using it completely.
