Circadin is licensed for the short-term treatment of insomnia in patients over 55 years old. The use of Circadin for jet lag is “off-label” meaning that the manufacturer did not recommend the product for relief of jet lag. This does not mean the product is unsafe but rather the manufacturer decided not to apply for an extra license as this can be very expensive. 

Circadin contains a synthetic version of Melatonin, a hormone found naturally in our bodies that regulates our sleep. Melatonin levels in the body are at their highest at night, promoting you to fall asleep and levels are reduced in the morning, helping you to wake up. In jet lag, the release of this hormone is disrupted causing symptoms of insomnia and fatigue. Melatonin supplement, Circadin, can help regulate your sleep cycle again aiding restful sleep and improving daytime function. 

The use of Circadin in the treatment of insomnia is well known. It has been proven in studies to reduce the time taken to fall asleep, improve the quality of sleep and improve daytime functioning. Circadin mimics the body’s natural release profile of Melatonin hormone gradually over time to reset the natural circadian rhythm and restore sleep patterns. Studies have shown Melatonin to be effective in reducing jet lag in 90% of users crossing five or more time zones. It was also shown to be an effective option in reducing and preventing jet lag in travellers crossing 2-4 time zones. Circadin has not been shown to cause any dependence or withdrawal effects that are associated with traditional sleeping tablets. 

The recommended dose of Circadin for the management of jet lag is one tablet at bedtime in your new time zone on the day of arrival. You can continue taking Circadin for the following days depending on the response. Circadin does not cause instant drowsiness but promotes natural sleep 1-2 hours after taking. 

Possible side effects associated with Circadin use include:

·      Common (1 in 10 – 1 in 100 people) – none

·      Uncommon (1 in 100 – 1 in 1,000 people) -  irritability, nervousness, restlessness, insomnia, abnormal dreams, nightmares, anxiety, migraine, headache, lethargy (tiredness, lack of energy), restlessness associated with increased activity, dizziness, tiredness, high blood pressure, upper abdominal pain, indigestion, mouth ulceration, dry mouth, Feeling sick (nausea) , changes in the composition of your blood which could cause yellowing of the skin or eyes, inflammation of the skin, night sweats, itching, rash, dry skin, pain in extremities, menopausal symptoms, feeling of weakness, excretion of glucose in the urine, excess proteins in the urine, abnormal liver function and weight increase.
