Loratadine is a type of antihistamine medication so it works by stopping the effects of histamine in the body. 

Histamine is a chemical that is released by the body in response to an allergen and it is responsible for the symptoms associated with allergic reactions and hay fever. Blocking the effects of histamine can provide relief from the symptoms of hay fever and allergies.  

Loratadine is another type of newer (2nd-generation) antihistamines, meaning it has the benefit of being less likely to cause drowsiness and sedation when compared to older 1st-generation antihistamines.

How does Clarityn Allergy (Loratadine) help allergies?

Loratadine has been shown to begin working an hour after a dose with the effects lasting 24 hours. The effectiveness of Loratadine has been studied in over 10,000 patients for both the management of allergies and hives. 

The medication was shown to be superior compared to a placebo (sugar pill) in improving the symptoms of allergies such as nasal symptoms, itching and hives. In these studies, drowsiness from Loratadine was the same as the one from sugar pills.

Does Clarityn Allergy (Loratadine) really help?

Generic and branded make of a medicine are the same and both makes have to meet the same quality and safety standards before they are allowed to be sold as a medicine.

What is the difference between brand and Generic makes of a medicine?

A branded make of medicine initially becomes available for sale by the innovating manufacturer that has discovered the medicine through a very expensive process. After the patent period is over, other manufacturers will be allowed to manufacture this branded medicine, but they will only be allowed to offer the medicine under the medicines actual name (known as the Generic name) or through their own new brand for marketing purposes. As this process is not as expensive as the initial medicine discovery, generic manufactures can offer the medicine at a much cheaper price compared to the innovator’s branded one. 

Why is the generic make cheaper than the brand?

The recommended dose of Loratadine is one 10mg tablet once a day (24 hourly). For the management of hay fever, it is recommended that you take Loratadine daily throughout the hay fever season in order to provide constant relief from symptoms. Loratadine syrup is also available for use in children over 2 years of age.
