The active ingredient in ellaOne, Ulipristal acetate, prevents the action of the hormone progesterone. When taken after unprotected sex, it can delay the release of the egg from the ovary preventing fertilisation with the sperm and protecting you from pregnancy. 

How does ellaOne prevent unplanned pregnancy?

ellaOne (Ulipristal) can successfully prevent pregnancy when taken up to 5 days (120 hours) after unprotected sex but it is more effective the sooner it is taken. In clinical trials ellaOne was shown to prevent pregnancy in over 95% of cases when taken within the recommended time frame. 

ellaOne does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) that result from unprotected sex.

ellaOne is taken as single oral tablet as soon as possible after unprotected sexual intercourse. It should be taken no later than 5 days (120 hours) after sexual intercourse. This medicine can be taken at any time of the day and at any point during your menstrual cycle. 

If you vomit (get sick) in the first 3 hours after taking ellaOne, another tablet should be taken as soon as possible. Pregnancy should be excluded before taking ellaOne although it will not be dangerous to the foetus and will not cause an abortion even if taken by mistake. 

Possible side effects associated with ellaOne use include:

- Common (1 in 10 – 1 in 100 people) – feeling sick (nausea) , abdominal (stomach) pain or discomfort, vomiting - painful periods, pelvic pain, breast tenderness - headache, dizziness, mood swings, muscle pain, back pain, tiredness

- Uncommon (1 in 100 – 1 in 1,000 people) - diarrhoea, heartburn, wind, dry mouth - unusual or irregular vaginal bleeding, heavy/prolonged periods premenstrual syndrome, vaginal irritation or discharge, lesser or greater sex drive - hot flushes - appetite changes, emotional disorders, anxiety, agitation, trouble sleeping, sleepiness, migraine visual disturbances - influenza - acne, skin lesions, itching - fever, chills, malaise
