EMLA is a topical cream that contains two active ingredients, Prilocaine and Lidocaine. These are local anaesthetics or numbing agents and when applied to the penis, can help reduce its sensitivity and prolong the time taken to ejaculate.

The two active ingredients in EMLA cream are Prilocaine (2.5%) and Lidocaine (2.5%). These medications were originally developed as anaesthetics for a wide range of medical procedures. When these medicines are applied to the skin, they block sensation/pain receptors and nerve endings. 

The duration of effect depends on the amount of the time the cream is in contact with the skin. When EMLA cream is applied to the skin it can decrease the sensitivity of the penis allowing users who suffer from PE to have sexual intercourse for longer periods.

How does EMLA help my premature ejaculation?

EMLA cream, when applied to the penis, has been shown to be effective in several studies and in practice. It is effective in over 70% of cases by increasing the amount of time taken to ejaculate during sexual intercourse which can lead to longer and more fulfilling sex.

The most effective way to use EMLA cream is to apply a pea-sized amount to the tip of the penis at least 15-20 minutes before sex. It is important to wash off the cream before sex as it can make your partner numb. 

EMLA should not be applied to any broken skin (cuts, rashes, spots). 

Possible side effects associated with EMLA use include:

Common (1 in 10 – 1 in 100 people) – temporary local skin reactions (paleness, redness, swelling) in the treated area during treatment of skin, genital mucosa or leg ulcers, initial mild sensation of burning, itching or warmth at the treated area during treatment of genital mucosa or leg ulcers


Uncommon (1 in 100 – 1 in 1,000 people) -  initial mild sensation of burning, itching or warmth at the treated area during treatment of the skin, numbness (tingling) in the treated area during treatment of genital mucosa
