Finasteride works by inhibiting an enzyme know as 5-alpha reductase. This enzyme increases the amount of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body, the hormone responsible for weakening hair follicles. DHT reduces the duration of the growth phase of a hair follicle leading to thin and weakened hairs. Finasteride has been scientifically proven to lower the amount of DHT in the scalp. 

The benefits of taking Finasteride for male pattern baldness have been proven in clinical trials where it has shown to not only slow the progression of hair loss in 86% of men but also to encourage re-growth.

Finasteride is taken as single 1mg tablet once each day (24 hourly) with a full glass of water either before or after food. Finasteride is only suitable for men. Possible side effects associated with Finasteride use include:

·      Uncommon (1 in 100 – 1 in 1,000 people) - impotence, loss of libido, depression
