Fluconazole is a medicine which belongs to a group of medicines known as anti-fungals. it is used to treat infections caused by fungi and may also be used to stop you from getting a candidal infection. The most common cause of fungal infections is yeast called Candida.

Fluconazole works by targeting the underlying cause of thrush by affecting the fungal membrane and killing fungi including yeasts. Thrush is commonly caused in women by a type of yeast known as candida and Fluconazole is very effective against it.  

Fluconazole has been in use since 1988 and its effectiveness against fungi has been well established in clinical use over many years. 

Generic and branded make of a medicine are the same and both makes have to meet the same quality and safety standards before they are allowed to be sold as a medicine.

After the patent period is over, other manufacturers will be allowed to manufacture this branded medicine, but they will only be allowed to offer the medicine under the medicines actual name (known as the Generic name) or through their own new brand for marketing purposes. As this process is not as expensive as the initial medicine discovery, generic manufactures can offer the medicine at a much cheaper price compared to the innovator’s branded one.

Possible side effects associated with Fluconazole use include:

- Common side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):  headache, stomach discomfort, diarrhoea, feeling sick, vomiting, rash 

- Uncommon side effects (may affect up to 1 in 100 people): decreased appetite, inability to sleep, feeling drowsy, fit, dizziness, sensation of spinning, tingling, pricking or numbness, changes in sense of taste, constipation, difficult digestion, wind, dry mouth, muscle pain
