Imigran is a branded migraine medicine containing sumatriptan. Sumatriptan belongs to a group of medicines called triptans and is used to treat migraine attacks in adults.

Sumatriptan acts on serotonin receptors involved in migraine. It helps reduce migraine-related changes in blood vessels and pain pathways, helping relieve symptoms during a migraine attack.

Sumatriptan is a licensed medicine for acute migraine treatment. It may help suitable patients when taken as directed during a migraine attack, but it is not suitable for everyone and does not prevent migraines.

Imigran is the branded version and sumatriptan is the active ingredient. Generic sumatriptan contains the same active ingredient and is used for the same purpose, although brand, packaging, appearance and price may differ.

Imigran vs generic Sumatriptan: what is the difference?

Generic sumatriptan is usually cheaper because it is made by manufacturers after the original brand patent has expired. The medicine must still meet UK standards for quality, safety and effectiveness.

Why is generic Sumatriptan cheaper than branded Imigran?

The usual recommended adult dose is one 50mg tablet, although some patients may require 100mg. If symptoms return after initially improving, a second dose may be taken after at least 2 hours, but no more than 300mg should be taken in 24 hours.

No. Sumatriptan tablets are used to treat migraine attacks once they have started. They are not used as a daily migraine prevention medicine.

Are Sumatriptan tablets used to prevent migraines?

Possible side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, flushing, tiredness, tingling, warmth, heaviness, tightness or pressure sensations. Seek urgent medical help if you experience severe chest pain, breathing difficulty, signs of an allergic reaction, or symptoms that feel unusual for you.
