Lansoprazole is proven to decrease the amount of acid produced by the stomach, providing effective, long lasting heartburn relief.

Lansoprazole is another medication that belongs to the family of medicines known as Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI’s). Proton pumps are cells found in the lining of the stomach and are responsible for secreting gastric acid into the stomach. Lansoprazole prevents a proportion of these proton pumps from working and reduces the amount of acid produced in the stomach that can be regurgitated, helping to control the symptoms of acid-reflux. 

Lansoprazole has been used for the treatment and prevention of indigestion and acid reflux for over 20 years and its effectiveness has been proven in multiple studies. Lansoprazole gets to work 1 hour after a dose but may take up to 4 days of continuous use to show its full effect. After 7 days of continuous use, Lansoprazole reduces gastric acid release by up to 90%. Lansoprazole is also clinically proven to reduce the frequency and severity of heartburn.

Generic and branded make of a medicine are the same and both makes have to meet the same quality and safety standards before they are allowed to be sold as a medicine.

What is the difference between and generic makes of a medicine?

A branded make of medicine initially becomes available for sale by the innovating manufacturer that has discovered the medicine through a very expensive process. As a result, this manufacturer receives the right (patent) from the government to become the only company that is allowed to make and sell such medicine for many years so they can recuperate some of their expenses and make some profit from their work.

After the patent period is over, other manufacturers will be allowed to manufacture this branded medicine, but they will only be allowed to offer the medicine under the medicines actual name (known as the Generic name) or through their own new brand for marketing purposes. As this process is not as expensive as the initial medicine discovery, generic manufactures can offer the medicine at a much cheaper price compared to the innovator’s branded one. 

Why is the generic make cheaper than the brand?

The recommended starting dose of Lansoprazole for the management of indigestion is one 15mg capsule/tablet daily every morning for 2 to 4 weeks. The dose can be increased to 30mg depending on the severity of your symptoms and your response to a 15mg daily dose.

Lansoprazole should be taken at the same time each day, preferably 30min to 1 hour before breakfast, as part of your regular morning routine.

You may need to take Lansoprazole continuously if your symptoms are persistent, however, this must only do this after consultation with your doctor and further medical investigations to ensure its suitability.  

Possible side effects associated with Lansoprazole use include:

·      Very common (1 in 10 people) – none

·      Common (1 in 10 – 1 in 100 people) –benign polyps in the stomach, headache, dizziness, diarrhoea, constipation, stomach pains, feeling or being sick, wind, dry or sore mouth or throat, skin rash, itching, changes in liver function test values ,tiredness

·      Uncommon (1 in 100 – 1 in 1,000 people) - depression, joint and muscle pain, fluid retention or swelling, changes in blood cell counts, fracture in the hip, wrist or spine
