Levonelle is very effective and is suitable for use within 72 hours of unprotected sex or failure of contraceptive method. 

Levonorgestrel is a synthetic hormone that works in a similar way to the naturally occurring hormones that control the menstrual cycle. This medicine can help prevent pregnancy by two approaches, it prevents the ovaries from releasing an egg and can also stop sperm from fertilising the egg if one has already been released. 

Levonelle is not suitable as a regular contraceptive. 

How does Levonelle prevent unplanned pregnancy?

Levonelle is one of the most effective methods of EC. Levonelle has a higher success rate the sooner it is taken after unprotected sex. It should be taken within 72 hours, but studies show that its effectiveness is 95% within 24 hours, 85% between 24-48 hours and 58% if started between 48 and 72 hours. 

Levonelle does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STI’s) that result from unprotected sex.

What is the difference between brand and Generic makes of a medicine?

A branded make of medicine initially becomes available for sale by the innovating manufacturer that has discovered the medicine through a very expensive process. As a result, this manufacturer receives the right (patent) from the government to become the only company that is allowed to make and sell such medicine for many years so they can recuperate some of their expenses and make some profit from their work.

After the patent period is over, other manufacturers will be allowed to manufacture this branded medicine, but they will only be allowed to offer the medicine under the medicines actual name (known as the Generic name) or through their own new brand for marketing purposes. As this process is not as expensive as the initial medicine discovery, generic manufactures can offer the medicine at a much cheaper price compared to the innovator’s branded one. 

Why is the generic make cheaper than the brand?

Levonelle is taken as a single dose tablet (1.5mg) as soon as possible after unprotected sexual intercourse, preferably within 12 hours but no later than 72 hours (3 days) after. 

If you are sick (vomit) within three hours of taking the tablet, you should take another tablet. Pregnancy should be excluded before taking Levonelle although it will not be dangerous to the foetus and will not cause abortion or harm to the foetus even if taken by mistake.

There is also some evidence that Levonelle may be less effective with increasing body weight or Body Mass Index (BMI) and therefore users who are overweight or have a high BMI may need a double dose (or take a single dose of ellaOne tablet). 

Levonelle should only be used as an emergency option and is not suitable for use as a regular daily method of contraception. 

Possible side effects associated with Levonelle use include:

·      Very common (1 in 10 people) – feeling sick (nausea) - you might have some irregular bleeding until your next period - you might have lower abdominal pain - tiredness – headache

·      Common (1 in 10 – 1 in 100 people) - dizziness, diarrhoea, vomiting, breast tenderness, menstruation irregularity

·      Uncommon (1 in 100 – 1 in 1,000 people) – none
