It comes as an oral tablet that is taken about 1 hour before planned sexual activity. It can increase blood flow to the penis helping to achieve better and lasting erections. Sildenafil will not trigger an erection in the absence of sexual arousal. 

Sildenafil (Viagra) is a potent inhibitor of the enzyme phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5). PDE-5 causes blood vessels to constrict and can prevent blood flow to the penis making it difficult to get an erection. Sildenafil reduces the effect of PDE-5 making it easier for blood to get to the penis making it easier to achieve and maintain an erection. 

How does Sildenafil help my erectile dysfunction?

Sildenafil(Viagra) has been around for over 20 years and there are plenty of evidence to prove its effectiveness. Sildenafil gets to work between 30 to 60 minutes after it is taken by mouth, but the work can be delayed by eating a large meal or consuming alcohol. Sildenafil has been shown to be effective in 4 out of 5 people.

What is the difference between brand and generic makes of a medicine?

A branded make of medicine initially becomes available for sale by the innovating manufacturer that has discovered the medicine through a very expensive process. As a result, this manufacturer receives the right (patent) from the government to become the only company that is allowed to make and sell such medicine for many years so they can recuperate some of their expenses and make some profit from their work.

After the patent period is over, other manufacturers will be allowed to manufacture this branded medicine, but they will only be allowed to offer the medicine under the medicines actual name (known as the Generic name) or through their own new brand for marketing purposes. As this process is not as expensive as the initial medicine discovery, generic manufactures can offer the medicine at a much cheaper price compared to the innovator’s branded one. 

Why is the generic make cheaper than the brand?

Sildenafil (Viagra) is taken as an oral tablet and should be taken approximately 1 hour before sexual activity and the effect can last up to 4 hours. The starting dose for most men is 50mg but this can be increased to 100mg or decreased to 25mg based on your satisfaction with the erection and possibility of side effects. You should not take more than one tablet per day (24 hours). You will still need sexual stimulation to have erection by taking Sildenafil. 

Possible side effects associated with Sildenafil use include:

Very common (1 in 10 people) – headache

Common (1 in 10 – 1 in 100 people) – feeling sick (nausea), facial flushing, hot flush  (symptoms include a sudden feeling of heat in your upper body), indigestion, colour tinge to vision, blurred vision, visual disturbance, stuffy nose and dizziness

Uncommon (1 in 100 – 1 in 1,000 people) – vomiting, skin rash, eye irritation, bloodshot/red eyes, eye pain, seeing flashes of light, visual brightness, light sensitivity, watery eyes, pounding heartbeat, rapid heartbeat, high/low blood pressure, muscle pain, feeling sleepy, reduced sense of touch, vertigo, ringing in the ears, dry mouth, blocked or stuffy sinuses, upper abdominal pain, heartburn, presence of blood in urine, pain in the arms or legs, nosebleed, feeling hot and feeling tired
