Cetirizine was made popular under the brand names Benadryl and Zirtek tablets including oral solutions but it is now commonly seen as a generic medication. Cetirizine provides both quick and long-lasting relief from allergies helping you to get on with your day relieved. 

Cetirizine is a type of antihistamine medication so it works by stopping the effects of histamine in the body. Histamine is released by the body in response to an allergen and it is responsible for the symptoms associated with allergic reactions and hay fever. Blocking the effects of histamine can provide relief from the symptoms of hay fever and allergies.  

Cetirizine is another type of newer (2nd-generation) antihistamines, meaning it has the benefit of being less likely to cause drowsiness and sedation when compared to older 1st-generation antihistamines.

The effectiveness of Cetirizine has been studied in various clinical trials for both the management of hay fever and allergic skin reactions. Studies show that Cetirizine strongly prevents skin reactions that are caused by high levels of histamine.

Cetirizine has also shown to be effective in managing symptoms of both seasonal and persistent allergies including eye and nose symptoms, even after 1 day of treatment. Cetirizine provides constant relief when taken consistently over a 2-4 week period. 

Generic and branded make of a medicine are the same and both makes have to meet the same quality and safety standards before they are allowed to be sold as a medicine.

What is the difference between brand and generic makes of a medicine?

A branded make of medicine initially becomes available for sale by the innovating manufacturer that has discovered the medicine through a very expensive process. As a result, this manufacturer receives the right (patent) from the government to become the only company that is allowed to make and sell such medicine for many years so they can recuperate some of their expenses and make some profit from their work.

After the patent period is over, other manufacturers will be allowed to manufacture this branded medicine, but they will only be allowed to offer the medicine under the medicines actual name (known as the Generic name) or through their own new brand for marketing purposes. As this process is not as expensive as the initial medicine discovery, generic manufactures can offer the medicine at a much cheaper price compared to the innovator’s branded one. 

Why is the generic make cheaper than the brand?

The recommended dose of Cetirizine is one tablet (10mg) once a day for adults and children over 12 years old.  For children aged between 6 and 12 years, the recommended dose is half a tablet (5mg) twice a day. These tablets should be taken with a glass of water. 

You can take Cetirizine as necessary when you are exposed to an allergy or for persistent conditions such as hay fever, it may be beneficial to take Cetirizine every day to get continuous relief. 

Possible side effects associated with Cetirizine use include:

Common (1 in 10 – 1 in 100 people) – headache or dizziness, drowsiness or tiredness, Restlessness, dry mouth, sore throat, upset stomach, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, feeling sick (nausea), runny nose


Uncommon (1 in 100 – 1 in 1,000 people) - agitation, unusual weakness, feeling of general discomfort or uneasiness, pins & needles
