Chlorphenamine is classified as a sedating antihistamine. This offers the benefit of aiding with restful sleep when symptoms are troubling you during the night. Chlorphenamine is available a tablet and an oral solution for both adults and children over 1 years old.

Chlorphenamine is a type of antihistamine medication so it works by stopping the effects of histamine in the body. Histamine is released by the body in response to an allergen and it is responsible for the symptoms associated with allergic reactions and hay fever. Blocking the effects of histamine can provide relief from the symptoms of hay fever and allergies. 

 Chlorphenamine is a type of older (1st-generation) antihistamine and it is more likely to cause drowsiness and sedation when compared to newer (2nd-generation) antihistamines like Fexofenadine, Cetirizine and Loratadine.

Chlorphenamine has been used for the management of allergic conditions for more than 50 years. Chlorphenamine has been proven to reduce the effect of histamine in the body leading to greater control of symptoms of allergies and hay fever. 

The main difference between Chlorphenamine and other non-drowsy newer antihistamines is that Chlorphenamine can enter the central nervous system and cause drowsiness and fatigue. This effect may be desirable such as when symptoms are impacting your quality of sleep or when children cannot sleep due to itchiness associated with chickenpox. 

Chlorphenamine begins working 30 minutes after a dose and the effect lasts between 4-6 hours, hence the multiple dosing throughout a day. 

Generic and branded make of a medicine are the same and both makes have to meet the same quality and safety standards before they are allowed to be sold as a medicine.

What is the difference between brand and generic makes of a medicine?

A branded make of medicine initially becomes available for sale by the innovating manufacturer that has discovered the medicine through a very expensive process. As a result, this manufacturer receives the right (patent) from the government to become the only company that is allowed to make and sell such medicine for many years so they can recuperate some of their expenses and make some profit from their work.

After the patent period is over, other manufacturers will be allowed to manufacture this branded medicine, but they will only be allowed to offer the medicine under the medicines actual name (known as the Generic name) or through their own new brand for marketing purposes. As this process is not as expensive as the initial medicine discovery, generic manufactures can offer the medicine at a much cheaper price compared to the innovator’s branded one. 

Why is the generic make cheaper than the brand?

The recommended dose of Chlorphenamine for adults and children over 12 years is one tablet (4mg) every 4-6 hours as required for the relief of allergy symptoms. The maximum dose of Chlorphenamine is six tablets (24mg) in any 24-hour period. 

For children aged 6 to 12 years old, the recommended dose is a half tablet (2mg) every 4-6 hours as required for the relief of allergy symptoms. The maximum dose of Chlorphenamine is six half tablets (12mg) in a 24-hour period. 

For children between 1 and 6 years old, Chlorphenamine solution (2mg/5ml) is available as tablets are not a suitable form. 

The recommended dose of Chlorphenamine solution for 2 to 6 years old is 1mg (2.5ml) every 4 to 6 hourly. The maximum daily dose for this age group is 6mg (15ml) in any 24-hour period. 

The recommended dose of Chlorphenamine solution for children of 1-2 years old is 1mg (2.5ml) twice a day with at least 4 hours between the doses. 

Possible side effects associated with Chlorphenamine use include:

·      Very common (1 in 10 people) – sedation, drowsiness

·      Common (1 in 10 – 1 in 100 people) – disturbance in attention, abnormal coordination, dizziness headache, blurred vision, dry mouth, feeling sick, fatigue

·      Uncommon (1 in 100 – 1 in 1,000 people) – none
