Rabeprazole is used to treat the symptoms of heartburn and acid reflux. Heartburn is a burning feeling rising from the stomach or lower chest up towards the neck. The name of the proprietary brand for Rabeprazole was Pariet. Pariet is no longer routinely used in the UK that is why My Private Pharmacist offers only the generic Rabeprazole 10mg. Rabeprazole works by reducing the amount of acid made by the stomach. Rabeprazole belongs to a group of medicines known as Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs). 

Proton pumps are located on Parietal cells on the surface of the stomach lining which release the stomach acid. PPIs block the action of some these acid pumps so they reduce the amount of excess acid in the stomach. Less acid in the stomach means that there is a lower possibility of acidic content of the stomach going up the food pipe (oesophagus) to cause heartburn. 

Rabeprazole has been in clinical use since 1997 and its safety and effectiveness are well established. Please follow the dosage instructions. 

Generic and branded make of a medicine are the same and both makes have to meet the same quality and safety standards before they are allowed to be sold as a medicine.

What is the difference between and generic makes of a medicine?

A branded make of medicine initially becomes available for sale by the innovating manufacturer that has discovered the medicine through a very expensive process. As a result, this manufacturer receives the right (patent) from the government to become the only company that is allowed to make and sell such medicine for many years so they can recuperate some of their expenses and make some profit from their work.

After the patent period is over, other manufacturers will be allowed to manufacture this branded medicine, but they will only be allowed to offer the medicine under the medicines actual name (known as the Generic name) or through their own new brand for marketing purposes. As this process is not as expensive as the initial medicine discovery, generic manufactures can offer the medicine at a much cheaper price compared to the innovator’s branded one. 

Why is the generic make cheaper than the brand?

One 10mg tablet once daily. Rabeprazole should best be taken on an empty stomach (1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals). Please note you must not take any indigestion remedies (e.g. Gaviscon, Rennies, etc) within two hours from taking the Rabeprazole as this can undermine the benefit of Rabeprazole. If your symptoms are severe that you may need a higher dose, please consult your general practitioner doctor.  

Common side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 people): 

Cough, sore throat, runny nose, stomach pain, diarrhoea, wind (flatulence), feeling sick (nausea), being sick (vomiting) or constipation, etc 

Uncommon side effects (may affect up to 1 in 100 people): 

Feeling nervous or drowsy, chest infection (bronchitis), painful and blocked sinuses (sinusitis). dry mouth, belching. •	 rash, skin redness (erythema). •	 muscle pains, joint pains, etc

Rare side effects (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people): 	

Blood problems such as reduced number of white cells or platelets. This can cause weakness, bruising or make infections more likely, changes in white blood cells (show in blood tests) which may result in frequent infection, allergic reactions including facial swelling, low blood pressure and breathing difficulties, etc
