Minoxidil is the active medicinal ingredient in Regaine and can be used in men between the age of 18 and 65 years old. It can be applied daily to the dry scalp as a topical foam or lotion and it has been shown to reduce and reverse hair loss in both men and women.

Minoxidil works by increasing the blood flow to the hair follicles in the scalp. This in turn increases the amount of nutrients and oxygen that reach each hair follicle helping to stimulate growth, even from inactive follicles with no visible hair.

Minoxidil has been clinically proven to both slow down the hair loss process while encouraging new hair growth in both men & women. When applied twice daily, Minoxidil has been effective in 9 out of 10 men after 16 weeks of treatment leading to thicker and healthier hair. 

The treatment is also effective in women where 8 out of 10 women show visible hair growth as early as 8 weeks into the treatment.

Generic and branded make of a medicine are the same and both makes have to meet the same quality and safety standards before they are allowed to be sold as a medicine.

What is the difference between brand and generic makes of a medicine?

A branded make of medicine initially becomes available for sale by the innovating manufacturer that has discovered the medicine through a very expensive process. As a result, this manufacturer receives the right (patent) from the government to become the only company that is allowed to make and sell such medicine for many years so they can recuperate some of their expenses and make some profit from their work.

After the patent period is over, other manufacturers will be allowed to manufacture this branded medicine, but they will only be allowed to offer the medicine under the medicines actual name (known as the Generic name) or through their own new brand for marketing purposes. As this process is not as expensive as the initial medicine discovery, generic manufactures can offer the medicine at a much cheaper price compared to the innovator’s branded one. 

Why is the generic make cheaper than the brand?

Minoxidil is applied directly to the scalp twice daily. As hair growth is a slow process, it may take up to 8 weeks before you experience visible results. Once hair growth occurs, you need to continue using this treatment twice a day to maintain results. It can be applied before brushing your teeth as an extra step in your daily routine!

If you do not notice any improvement after 52 weeks, discontinue Regaine. 

Possible side effects associated with Minoxidil use include:

Very common (1 in 10 people) – headache


Common (1 in 10 – 1 in 100 people) – Allergic reactions, rash, itch, weight gain, chest pain


Uncommon (1 in 100 – 1 in 1,000 people) – dizziness, palpitations, dyspnoea, Feeling sick (nausea)
