It contains azelastine hydrochloride, which works by helping to block the effects of histamine, a substance released by the body during an allergic reaction. Rhinolast can help relieve symptoms such as sneezing, a runny or itchy nose and nasal irritation. It is used directly in the nose and should be used as directed by your prescriber or pharmacist.

Yes. Rhinolast contains azelastine, an intranasal antihistamine used for allergic rhinitis, including hay fever. It can help relieve nasal allergy symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose and nasal itching by acting directly inside the nose. Intranasal antihistamines such as azelastine are recognised in UK guidance as having a fast onset of action, often within minutes, although nasal steroid sprays may be more effective for persistent or more severe symptoms.

For best results, use Rhinolast exactly as directed and continue to avoid known allergy triggers where possible. If your symptoms are severe, persistent, one-sided, or not improving, speak to a doctor or pharmacist for further advice.

Does Rhinolast (Azelastine) nasal spray really help?

No. Rhinolast is not a steroid nasal spray. It contains azelastine, which is an antihistamine nasal spray used to help relieve nasal allergy symptoms caused by hay fever and allergic rhinitis, such as sneezing, a runny nose, nasal itching and irritation. Steroid nasal sprays, such as fluticasone or mometasone, work differently by reducing inflammation and are often used for more persistent nasal allergy symptoms.

Rhinolast works directly inside the nose and may act quickly for some allergy symptoms. UK guidance recognises intranasal antihistamines such as azelastine as having the fastest onset of action, often within minutes, although intranasal corticosteroids may be more effective for persistent or more severe allergic rhinitis.

The usual recommended dose of Rhinolast is one spray into each nostril twice daily, usually in the morning and evening, or as advised by your prescriber or pharmacist. Try to use it regularly while you are exposed to allergy triggers, such as pollen, dust or pet dander. Do not use more than directed, and speak to a doctor or pharmacist if your symptoms do not improve or become worse.

Recommended dose of Rhinolast (Azelastine) nasal spray

Like all medicines, Rhinolast azelastine nasal spray can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them. The most common side effect is an unpleasant or bitter taste in the mouth, especially if you tilt your head backwards when using the spray. This can sometimes make you feel sick.

Other possible side effects include mild irritation inside the nose, such as stinging, itching or sneezing, and occasionally nosebleeds.

To reduce the risk of a bitter taste, keep your head slightly forward when using the spray and avoid sniffing too hard after spraying. Speak to a doctor or pharmacist if side effects are troublesome, persistent, or if you notice signs of an allergic reaction such as rash, itching, swelling or difficulty breathing.
