Shingles Vaccine

Shingles is a viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus responsible for chickenpox. It usually presents as a painful rash with blisters. Shingles occurs when the virus, which lies dormant in the body after a chickenpox infection, reactivates. It spreads through direct contact with the fluid from shingles blisters. 

Anyone can get shingles, but the risk is higher for individuals aged 50 and older, especially those with weakened immune systems. Shingrix, the shingles vaccine, is over 90% effective in preventing shingles and its complications, such as long-lasting nerve pain.

• Course: 2 doses.
• Schedule: Second dose usually 2 months after the first, with flexibility up to 6 months where appropriate.
• Protection and boosters: Studies in adults aged 50 and over show protection lasting at least 10 years after completing the course. Protection varies between individuals. There is currently no established routine booster schedule after the two-dose course.
