Zolmitriptan is a migraine medicine from a group of medicines called triptans. It is used to treat acute migraine attacks in adults once a migraine has started. It is not used to prevent migraines or to diagnose new headaches.

Yes. Zolmitriptan is the generic name of the active ingredient. Generic zolmitriptan tablets contain the active ingredient used for migraine treatment, although the manufacturer, tablet appearance, packaging and price may vary.

Generic zolmitriptan is usually cheaper because it is made by different manufacturers after the original branded medicine’s patent protection has ended. Generic medicines must still meet UK standards for quality, safety and effectiveness before they can be supplied. 

Why is generic Zolmitriptan cheaper than branded migraine medicines?

The usual recommended adult dose is 2.5mg for a migraine attack. If your migraine returns after initially improving, a second dose may be taken after at least 2 hours if advised. You should not take more than two doses in 24 hours, and the total daily dose should not exceed 10mg.

No. Zolmitriptan tablets are used to treat migraine attacks once they have started. They are not taken every day to prevent future migraines. If you are having frequent migraines, speak to your GP or another appropriate healthcare professional about whether a migraine prevention plan may be needed.

Are Zolmitriptan tablets used to prevent migraines?

If the first dose does not help the same migraine attack, a second dose is unlikely to help that same attack. If your migraine improves but then returns, a second dose may be taken after at least 2 hours, provided this is within the recommended daily limit and your prescriber has advised it is suitable.

Can I take another Zolmitriptan tablet if the first one does not work?

ike all medicines, zolmitriptan can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them. Possible side effects include dizziness, sleepiness, feeling warm, nausea, dry mouth, stomach pain, muscle weakness, tingling or unusual sensations, and feelings of heaviness, tightness, pain or pressure in areas such as the chest, throat, neck, arms or legs.
