Can I get UTI treatment online in the UK?

Common cystitis or lower UTI symptoms include burning or pain when passing urine, needing to urinate more often, urgency, lower abdominal discomfort, cloudy urine, strong-smelling urine, or blood in the urine. 

Some symptoms can also suggest a more serious infection, so your consultation should include enough information to assess your risk.

What symptoms suggest cystitis or a lower UTI?

You should seek urgent medical advice if you have fever, chills, back or loin pain, blood in the urine, vomiting, severe pain, pregnancy, catheter-related symptoms, symptoms in a man, diabetes, a weakened immune system, or if you feel very unwell. These may suggest a complicated UTI, kidney infection or another condition needing urgent assessment.

When should I seek urgent medical advice for UTI symptoms?

Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic commonly used for acute uncomplicated lower UTI, where clinically suitable. Hiprex contains methenamine hippurate and is a non-antibiotic urinary antiseptic used mainly for recurrent UTI prevention or maintenance treatment after an acute infection has been treated. Your consultation helps assess which option may be appropriate.

What is the difference between Nitrofurantoin and Hiprex?

If you have UTI symptoms now, such as burning, urgency or frequency, you may need assessment for acute UTI treatment, such as nitrofurantoin if suitable. If you keep getting UTIs or recurrent cystitis, Hiprex may be considered for longer-term prevention after active infection has been treated or ruled out.

No. Nitrofurantoin may be suitable for some people with uncomplicated lower UTI, but it is not suitable for everyone. Suitability depends on your symptoms, age, sex, pregnancy status, kidney function, allergies, current medicines, previous antibiotic use, and whether there are signs of kidney infection or complicated UTI.

Is Nitrofurantoin suitable for everyone with cystitis?

Hiprex is licensed for urinary tract infection treatment and prevention, but it is commonly used as maintenance or preventative treatment after an acute UTI has been treated. If you have UTI symptoms now, start with a UTI consultation so our clinical team can assess whether you may need acute treatment first.

Men with UTI symptoms usually need a more careful assessment because urinary symptoms in men can be linked to prostate, bladder, kidney or urinary tract problems. You can start an online consultation, but we may advise you to see your GP, NHS 111, urgent care or a urology specialist before treatment can be supplied.

If you are pregnant and think you have a UTI, you should seek prompt medical advice. UTIs in pregnancy need careful assessment and may require urine testing and specific antibiotic choices. Our online service may redirect pregnant patients to their GP, midwife, NHS 111 or urgent care where appropriate.

A urine test is not always needed for straightforward lower UTI symptoms in suitable patients, but it may be needed if symptoms are recurrent, complicated, unusual, severe, not improving, or if you are pregnant, male, older, catheterised, or at higher risk. Do I need a urine test before UTI treatment?

Multistix urine test strips can check markers such as leukocytes, nitrites, blood and urine pH. They may help you monitor urinary health at home, but they do not replace professional assessment. If you have symptoms, feel unwell, or test results are concerning, you should seek medical advice.

What are Multistix urine test strips used for?

You should preferably avoid urine-alkalising cystitis sachets, such as products containing potassium citrate or sodium citrate, while taking Hiprex unless a clinician has advised otherwise. Hiprex works best in acidic urine, and alkalising products may make it less effective.

Recurrent UTI usually means repeated UTIs, often described as two or more infections in six months or three or more infections in twelve months. 

Recurrent symptoms should be assessed to decide whether prevention, urine testing, further investigation or specialist advice is needed.
