Hiprex (methenamine hippurate) is a medicine with a proven effectiveness for treatment and prevention of recurrent lower urinary tract (bladder) infections including embedded UTIs. The infection can cause inflammation of the bladder known as Cystitis. 

Cystitis is more common in women because the tube that carries urine from bladder out of the body (urethra) is much shorter than men's. Due to the symptoms including the need to pass water (pee) more frequently and with urgency, cystitis is also commonly referred to as 'Water Infection'.

In some countries Hiprex might also be known under the brand name Hyprex although this is just a variation of the name for those markets. In the UK the licensed brand of Methenamine Hippurate is known as Hiprex.

Hiprex is NOT an ANTIBIOTIC hence it does not have the risks and side effects associated with antibiotics. 

Yes, Hiprex can be taken together with antibiotics and it may even have a synergistic benefit. It means Hiprex and the antibiotics will work with different mechanisms to fight and eliminate cystitis infection.   

Hiprex must not be taken whilst you are on a course of Co-Trimoxazole (antibiotics containing combination of Trimethoprim and Sulfamethoxazole). This is because Hiprex and Sulfamethoxazole do not go well together and they may increase the risk of crystals in urine and bladder. 

Taking Hiprex with Trimethoprim is fine as they do not interact with each other.  

Once a course of Co-trimoxazole finished, you can re-start using Hiprex 24-48 hours after the last dose of Co-trimoxazole.
