Understanding Motion & Travel Sickness

Motion sickness, also known as travel sickness, occurs when your brain receives conflicting signals from your eyes, inner ear and body while travelling. It can affect people during car journeys, boat trips, flights, train travel and even some amusement rides. Common symptoms include nausea, dizziness, feeling sick, vomiting, headache, sweating and feeling pale.

Travel sickness can affect both adults and children, although some people are more susceptible than others. Symptoms often develop when reading, using screens or focusing on nearby objects while travelling. Many people find symptoms improve once the journey ends, but prevention is usually more effective than trying to treat symptoms after they have started.

At My Private Pharmacist, we offer a range of motion sickness and travel sickness treatments to help travellers prepare for journeys by car, plane, train or boat. Depending on your age, travel plans and medical history, options may include medicines containing hyoscine hydrobromide, cinnarizine or other suitable travel sickness treatments. Always read the Patient Information Leaflet and follow the advice provided with your medicine.

Alongside medication, practical measures may help reduce symptoms. These include sitting where motion is least noticeable, looking towards the horizon, avoiding heavy meals before travel, staying hydrated and limiting screen use during journeys.
