What is Acne?

Acne is a common skin condition that describes the appearance of spots or pimples on the skin. It is commonly seen in teenagers and young adults and affects both men and women. It is believed that acne affects over 90% of people aged 11 to 30 at some point in their life.

Acne usually subsides when you get older, but in some cases, it can continue into adult life. Acne ranges from mild to severe and can cause a great deal of pain and discomfort as well as impacting confidence and self-esteem.

Acne is caused when the sebaceous glands in the skin produce too much sebum, an oily substance produced by the skin and hair to prevent it from drying out. A combination of this oily substance with dead skin cells can block pores in the skin. These blocked pores are the perfect environment for bacteria to grow and thrive, which triggers inflammation and the formation of spots or pimples. Acne is mostly seen on the face but can also appear on the neck, chest, shoulders and back.

There are 6 main types of spots caused by acne.

  1. Blackheads: small black or yellowish bumps that develop on the skin
  2. Whiteheads: similar appearance to blackheads, but may be firmer and will not empty when squeezed
  3. Papules: small red bumps that may feel tender or sore
  4. Pustules: similar to papules, but have a white tip in the centre, caused by a build-up of pus
  5. Nodules: large hard lumps that build up beneath the surface of the skin and can be painful
  6. Cysts: large pus-filled lumps that carry the greatest risk of causing permanent scarring

The excess production of sebum by the skin is attributed to changes in hormones in the body. That is why acne is commonly seen in teenagers going through puberty where hormones are fluctuating but also during different stages of the menstrual cycle and during pregnancy.

How we can help you

Although there is no absolute cure for acne, there are several treatment options available to help manage and reduce the number and severity of breakouts.

There are some hygiene tips you can follow if you experience acne such as washing your face lightly no more than twice a day, avoid picking or squeezing spots and wearing less makeup.

Acne can be controlled in some people by using over-the-counter remedies such as face washes, creams and cleansers but if they are not enough, there are some stronger prescription strength medications available.

Here at My Private Pharmacist we offer a wide range of treatments in the form of antibiotics, hormone regulators and topical creams as well as comprehensive pharmacy counselling to help you take control of your acne treatment.
